"Chasing Amy" had an awful lot going for it, an awful lot to say. I was glad to finally catch it second-run last night. However, I personally saw two distinct plot threads: (a) lesbianism is a state of being and cannot necessarily be turned around or turned off, and (b) one can't discount half the human population on the basis of sex when looking for "that" perfect person. If Smith had done two different films, each tackling one of these threads, he would have been offering two strong and necessary commentaries. As it is, it ends up looking like Alyssa switched to bisexuality--but, in fact, had been a technical bisexual all along. The message, if there is one meant, is confused.
Some other points. Joey Lauren Adams should never be cast in a role where she's crying and offering a diatribe at the same time. Her whining gave me a headache. A character like Holden should at least be a little likeable, so that we might see why Alyssa would fall in love witn him. He wasn't. He was an insensitive prick. I doubt a core group of friends would suddenly ostracize one of their number on the basis of their sexual choices--no lesbian or gay folk that I know would act in such a heartless manner over a personal issue. Finally, the "let's all have sex" idea, in order to bring Holden, Banky, and Alyssa together in a higher plane of understanding. Yeah, I get the premise, but it seems a little too far-flung for me. There's other stuff, too, but I'm boring you.
Kevin Smith should stick to comedy, a la Clerks and Mallrats. He should not wield more serious subjects.
