I thought this WAS two movies, in that I didn't understand Banky's character at all. He connects with Alyssa about muff diving in the club, but then all of a sudden he hates her? My take on men (myself included) is that we are all so desperate to find women who are into the things that we are into, that a normal reaction from Banky would have been to keep shaking his head and telling his buddy Holden how unbelievably cool he thought Alyssa was. Sure, one could read the scene as displaying Banky's closeted-gay relief to find that Alyssa was gay and wasn't going to take Holden away from him, i.e. that he was just stringing Alyssa along, laughing with her in relief at the sudden absence of a threat, but I think the more logical reading is that Banky and Alyssa were conecting.
I also don't understand the idea implied later in the movie that guys who dig pornography must be closet women-hating gays. Banky is leaving town, and he's carrying a stash of hetero porno mags with him - so suddenly he's gay? What is it with the prevalence of this feminist (a sexist one-sided word if there ever was one) idea that female fantasy is okay, but male fantasy is perverted and must be explained away as something other than healthy appreciation for the visual?
Banky's character only makes sense if the man-hating side of Alyssa's personality wrote the movie.
