[Recession]: Officially, the recession began in March 2001 and lasted 9 months. The economy's growth had slowed prior to March, but it did not receed (negetive growth) until March).

[Response to 9-11, Afghanistan]: The war in Afghanistan, much like the war in Iraq, was planned prior to 9-11, not in response to 9-11. In 2000, future Vice President Cheney, future Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, future Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, Florida Governor and President Bush's brother Jeb Bush, and future Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff Lewis Libby commissioned a report from The Project for the New American Century called "Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources For a New Century". Notice how similar the report's suggestions, written prior to 9-11, mirror events that happened after 9-11. (http://tinyurl.com/39mqk) But as you can see, it has a happy ending: "December 27, 2002: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkmenistan sign an agreement for the building of the Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline, a US$3.2 billion project that has been delayed for many years."
