01/11/01: You may have a point

It is not my belief that young people can't think for themselves.

But my complaint is that Mtv does not (in general) devote the same amount of time or energy exploring the contrary opinions.

When I watched the gun special, it focused only on young, black males in a poor community, and how easy it was for them to buy guns. They didn't show any white suburbanites who keep a registered gun in their house for protection (just for the record - I support gun control), they showed the same kids for an hour. They followed them with a hidden camera to Wal-Mart to show just how easy it was for them to buy guns illegally.

On the marijuana special, I don't remember seeing any people who had become emotionally dependent (they say you "can't" be addicted to weed). They only talked about all the reasons it was stupid to keep weed illegal.

Does every single viewer already have these opinions? Certainly the majority, it seems, but Mtv makes no effort to provide information about the opposing viewpoint. I mean - really - how hard do you think they tried to get George W. on? And, again, you have a point, I'm sure they realize the majority of their viewers don't vote Republican, but this is secondary. Pandering is one thing, completely ignoring the opposite side of an issue is something else. It's a politically motivated act, in my opinion.

And it's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
