ANOTHER ONE
Somewhere in Dunwoody a family routine has been changed this morning. Instead of getting a 16 year-old son ready for another day of school, a family is making arrangements to get a 16 year-old son ready for burial.
Yup – happened again. Last night, around ten o’clock. This particular 16 year-old had been in possession of his driver’s license for about three months. He was also in possession of a late-model Jaguar, a rather fast car. So --- this teenager takes his late-model Jag out on the twists and turns of Spalding Drive to see just how good he is, and wraps himself around a tree.
There are some things to be thankful here, I guess. We can be thankful that this kid wrapped himself around a tree instead of some innocent family returning from dinner or the Hawks game. We can be thankful that this kid didn’t have a bunch of his friends in the car with him while he was showing his stuff – for the last time.
So --- now we have a family wondering if they did the right thing in allowing their child to get a driver’s license at 16. We have parents wondering if they should have let the kid go around driving a high-powered Jaguar. And we have a Georgia General Assembly considering laws to raise the driving age and put other restrictions on teenage driving.
You know, if we had more responsible parents out there – parents who aren’t intimidated by their children – parents who aren’t afraid to say “no” to their child’s demands – we wouldn’t even need a law.
I have friends who live in that neighborhood. I’m just thankful this kid didn’t kill one of them.
