01/11/01: Followup from someone who's 10 miles from that crash as you read this:

The child had BEGGED his Father to buy a new Jag for months, so Dad did..

BUT, the car is very clearly the FATHER'S car. Dad (who will NEVER live this down) admits that his deceased son begged him on a daily basis to drive the Jag, but the Dad only let him drive it twice: Once, with Dad a few weeks back, and the next -- and last-- time was last nite.

The idiot kid was supposed to drive 1 mile to a local Blockbuster, return some movies, and come back home -- 10 minute round trip. Instead, after an hour passed and no kid, Dad has to go out driving around looking for the son. He found the accident site, saw his wrecked Death machine around a tree, but police wouldn't let him see his dead son until a few hours later.

So don't go slammin' the Dad TOO much. The JAG was the Father's car -- NOT the son's. This was only the 2nd time EVER that the son had driven the car and the first time without Dad.

The son's regular vehicle is a mid-90s Toyota 4Runner. Although that's a Cadillac compared to my first VW Bug in 1986, it's not some fast luxury car, but a family hand-me- down.

honestly, I can't totally fault good ol' Dad here. I'm 100% sure his thoughts were "He's going to the blockbuster and back. What could possibly happen?"

The idiot non-seatbelt-wearing son is to blame. By the age of 16, one HAS to be aware of the dangers of speeding and of one's own mortality to SOME degree, anyways. I've driven the road in question 100 times or more. it is NOT the kind of highway to determine your car's top-speed.

Sadly, we can point fingers all we want, but this kid's Dad just ensured that the rest of his life will be spent in his own mental Hell.
