01/11/01: I didn't get my first car.......

...until I was 28 and had passed the test in the UK only the year before. it was a clapped out Singer which did well enough until my first long distance drive at which point the 'big end' went as I was travelling south from Edinburgh to visit the folks. I left it in a garage forecourt for scrap and took the train carrying all my luggage, and you know how you load up a car. Fortunately, my hernia recovered with conservative treatment. ( Gentle massage from a concerned nurse.)

My son,at 16, had to undergo the new graduated drivers licence system in BC Canada, a system I heartily endorse. An initial 'Learner' permit, known among the recipients a a 'Loser' permit, whereby they must be accompanied by an experienced driver ( hence my grey hair ), display a large 'L' sign and undergo a course of instruction from a recognised Driving School which make the application for a test for their next permit, the 'New Driver' permit, again colloquially known as the 'Nerd' permit. They may now drive unaccompanied but must display a large 'N' symbol on their car. After 18 months they can take another test which places a great degree of emphasis on 'defensive' driving. I don't often praise our government's initiatives but this is one which seems to be appropriate and effective.
