Producers Guild Nominates Best Films
The Producers Guild of America has nominated Almost Famous, Billy Elliot, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Erin Brockovich and Gladiator for its annual Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year award. The winner will be announced at the guild's 12th annual Golden Laurel Awards on March 3.

I suspect those are your five Oscar Best Picture nominees as well. Not that the Producers always agree with the Academy, which is an industry-wide nomination. For example, last year the producers nominated "The Hurricane" and "Being John Malkovich," in addition to "AB," "CHR" and "The Insider" -- the Oscars chose "The Green Mile" and "Sixth Sense" instead. Those were the two "populist" nominees, of course. Well, this year "Erin Brockovich" and "Gladiator" are this year's two potential "populist" nominees -- and the producers already chose them.
