But you are answering a question I didn't ask.
The reason I asked about Hearst having some kind of "Rosebud" himself was a snippet of that movie "RKO 281" I caught. It was a scene with Louella Parsons (Brenda Blethyn) and Hearst (James Cromwell) in which Louella is explaining the basic plot, and a few details of "Citizen Kane" to Hearst. She mentions the entire motivation of the character is his childhood toy - a sled called Rosebud - and Hearst reacts as if the "sled" (or something similar) was in fact a detail from his own life.
I really was just wondering if that scene had any basis in reality, not what Kane's (or Hearst's, for that matter) motivation to succeed was. I thought perhaps in later years, one of Hearst's friends (or perhaps Marion Davies) spilled the beans about the similarities between the film and his life. Otherwise, those personal details from "RKO 281" are entirely made-up.
Thanks for your response, though.
