10/17/97: Re: Affected Actor Extraordinaire

OK, Welles was a ham. But his canned ham is ten times better than the stuff offered as ham today (his Macbeth a few years later isn't ham at all---it's just brilliant). As for everyone else, Welles chose them because they were talented AND cheap. What's this about Jospeh Cotten's bad drunk scene? I thought he was pretty convincing. And Dorothy Comingore was brilliant as Susan Alexander; she gives you both the woman's brassy exterior and smart, grown-up interior (in the end, Susan's the only character who's actually reached her dotage with anything life maturity).

Maybe CITIZEN KANE isn't the best movie ever made, but it's a damn sight better than BLUE VELVET, which is little more than a film record of David Lynch's dirty little fantasies.
