05/21/04: Re: I DON'T hate rap music.

Oh my God! How can you people be so brazenly racist and still think you are the world's conscious reason. Rap music, which began in the Bronx, was listened to by a predominately black audience (it is a descendant of Jamaican 'Toasting' music). It extended to other urban areas which had a predominately black population. With the (divine?) intervention of white record label, little Johnny Suburbia could rebel against his middle-class parents by spouting lyrics which have no meaning for him. If you want to lay blame somewhere for the fact that so many people listen to rap or hip-hop, blame the fact that they must have good taste. I don't hate rap artists for wearing low trousers or for being totally 'bling'. I mean, come on!! It's like N-Sync or other 'loserboys' like that dressing a certain way or style to tell young boys and girls that that is who they are, despite the fact that it isn't. They are just feeding the big 'money machine'. It's all image, which is just as much a commodity today as the CD that the music is on. I can't just sit back and let you people criticise talented people who are doing what they can to further musical evolution. It's just wrong! Lets get one thing clear now, whatever you listen to, be it (like me) dance, rap or anything else, you must understand that it will evolve. When it's something you don't like, it means you're just too old or you just don't understand. Look then what happened with the arrival of Eminem. While rap is still taboo, Eminem brought it to the white man! Bollocks! I'm Irish and I've been listening to N.W.A and Run-D.M.C (not to mention Snoop dog etc.) since they arrived on the scene. Eminem has done nothing but cash in on the whole thing, and you know what? Well done Eminem, while I wouldn't be his biggest fan, I can admit that he is very talented. When some loser starts moaning about subcultures or their distaste for them I like to remember a little something that has made life on Earth very hard for countless people, something that may (or maybe should?) make you think twice about shoving your opinion in other peoples faces (or picking people off with a sniper rifle!) and that's Bigotry, baby! It's all around us. Instead of moaning, why can't you just accept that other people like it. That's called tolerance. I don't know about you but, I'd rather be known as tolerant instead of a bigot, you make up your own mind.
