12/25/96: The Crow/City of Angels/James O'Barr Comics

Posted By: Clyde Jones

For all of those who thought that City of Angels sucked (And especially for "Mr. Cranky"). I send a resounding:

FUCK YOU!!

James O'Barr (The guy who wrote the Crow comics that both movies were based on) had suggested the movie idea long before The Crow was out as a movie. He commended City of Angels as being true to the spirit of his creation and he suggested a third movie...

While Vincent Perez's performance as the Crow could never hold a candle to Brandon's, I think it deserves a lot more respect than most people give it.

I think that my letter will not melt any of your hearts and show you the error in your ways, if it does, so much the better to you all. I believe that someday, you might realize that the story of The Crow isn't about merchandising or trying to make a fast buck (although Mr. O'Barr is making quite a bit of money these days), it's a lesson to all of us. In these dark days we walk in, bad things happen. But while bad things happen, there will always be an equalizer, a last vengence upon evil. Like the old saying: What goes around comes around. I think that maybe some people who condemned City of Angels as a plot to squeeze money out of a tired idea will find that they will have few friends in my area. Here (in Tulsa, OK), several of my friends (devoted fans of the Crow, like me) hear people speaking of the Crow as a "Silly story, and that new one is just trying to get some more money for the producers..". I hear that and almost cry.

James O'Bar
