Of the 20 or so FM stations I get in San Francisco, I flip between two of them: KZQZ (95.7), which is a Top 40 station (although the term "Top 40" is misleading; many of the songs it plays aren't in the Billboard Top 40 and are a few years old), and KITS (105.3), the alternative rock station whose morning show I was a guest on for about 45 minutes when I came back from the National Spelling Bee finals in 1997. Both are good stations, but they each have problems: KZQZ has hundreds of songs, but tends to play the same few, like, 10 times a day apiece ("Torn," "Heaven," and "Truly Madly Deeply" come to mind), and as good as alternative rock can be, KITS plays a lot of bad music mixed in with the good stuff.
