08/31/1998: Why the Backstreet Boys don't HAVE to lip-sync...

There's a gadget in my Muscian's Friend catalog which can make anyone a decent singer. You enter the key the song is in, and sing away. It will automatically change the pitch of what you are singing to the nearest note in the scale you selected. It can do lots of other neat tricks like making a man sound like a woman and vice-versa (there's more to it than just changing the pitch), creating virtual backup singers, and can be controlled by music software that had the vocal melody preprogrammed, so you don't even have to get close to the notes you are trying for. It's well under $1000, I'm sure the big recording studios have even better equipment. A lot of artists use this kind of stuff, if you listen close you can sometimes hear a bit of artificiality in the vocals, but not always. I predict there will never be a Milli Vanilli type scandal again - if they had this technology back then, they could have let Fab and Rob do their own singing.
