03/25/98: "We had faces then"

Or at least, we all used to know how to have some fun with our masks. I won't go on and on from an old-timer's perspective. Since the Invasion of the Impostors, though, the anonymity that used to be the biggest draw at Cranky's seems to have degenerated to "Can't fool me! I know who that really is!" or to serve as blinds from which to get ducks lined up prior to blasting away.

It's no mystery that nowadays Cranky's is more real - more people know each other via e-mail, more vulnerabilities exposed, more honest posts - yet the flareups are nastier and go for the jugular. It used to be bad manners to poke holes in the illusion - but then that was when flaming was fierce yet impersonal. Maybe one of these days we'll "remember how to seem" and learn what should remain unsaid.

As for the so-called tradition of Not Saying - strikes me as one of those juicy rationalizations Jeff Goldblum mentions in "The Big Chill" as being more important than sex.
