I agree completely with Mr. Cranky's review. *SOME MINOR SPOILERS* When I heard about this movie, I thought it sounded great, prostitutes in Venice...I thought it sounded gritty. I mean, let's face it, prostitutes don't have the greatest lives. The movie was so glossy, so fantastical to be nearly ridiculous. Her mother teaches her the arts of love? in all her amorous experience she runs into ONE rich nobleman with a bizarre sexual kink? she knows how to use a sword? Plus, some of the plot was woefully predictable... of course, the spurned lover reappears to be an obsessed foe. Finally, what is with the title anyway? I never could figure it out. While the filmakers get credit for great costumes and gorgeous scenery (after Dangerous Beauty and Wings of the Dove, I am GOING to Venice!) the movie left me squirming and whispering apologies to my boyfriend I had dragged to see it.
