07/21/03: Uneven

This is not so much a bad film, but more an uneven film. It starts off showing the dark, depressing origins of our hero, blind lawyer Matt Murdock, AKA: Daredevil (Ben Affleck) and showing the wear and tear that his cover of night vigilante antics bring on him (lost teeth, busted bones, equaling chomping on pain killers) but then Elektra (Jennifer Garner) shows up and everything's happy go lucky except for the vigilante exploits, and then Elektra's dad bites the dust at the hands of Bullseye (Collin Farrell) and everything's depressed again. Then Elektra apparently dies, followed by Bullseye's very close brush with death (being thrown out of a church window by our hero) and then an all too brief fight between Daredevil and Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan) followed by a braille message that's supposed to restore our hero's faith in himself. If they had just stuck to being a depressed film about a depressed hero, it probably would have been better.

I thought Affleck did a decent job of being Daredevil, but Jennifer Garner wasn't that great as Elektra; of course, it doesn't help that Elektra was vastly changed from her comic book origins, and not for the better it seems. Farrell as a wild card villain and I know I'd never pick a fight with Duncan, but more should have been done with these villains.

Besides, Jennifer Garner would have been a better Rogue for X-Men.
