01/30/03: Hrm...

I'm actually arguing that I don't like films that are all narrative no form or films that are all form no narrative...I think both grossly underuse the film medium. Great films utilize both.

The thing about comics book is that you can't actually look at multiple images at the same time...I mean, you can technically, but you're not meant to, and I've seen a number of comic books, mostly manga, where whole panels take up a whole page anyway. Even though the information is presented in front of you, you're meant to transit from one to another, mentally filling in the gaps, not absorb it all at once ala a painting.

The other thing I was thinking about, and this might sound like a bit of step back from my earlier comment, was that I'm not so sure a film that's all form no narrative would necessarily be bad thing...I can think of some really interesting experimental films that toyed with it. The problem, bringing this back to its origin, with Far From Heaven, was that it HAD a narrative...a really really weak one. A movie perhaps doesn't have to have one, but if it does, then it's subject to criticism and analysis, regardless of form. Like, songs certainly don't need lyrical narratives, BUT, if they do, then the narratives will be evaluated as such.
