... and he made it really "unrealistic" and awkwardly acted (relative to what we're used to now), also true to the style of melodramas. That's what makes them melodramas - they're really melodramatic. However, if Haynes had made a movie that was just an unrelated string of melodrama like shots, I might have liked the movied even more.
