Critico: I've been too busy with other projects, plus there's 3 movies that I still absolutely need to see ("Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," "Quiet American" and especially "Talk to Her" -- the last two don't open here until Feb. 7). That said, I released a preliminary top 10 before Christmas in the now infamous "Two Towers" forum thread, and not much has changed between it and what my current preliminary list says. I will do my usual year-end thing next Friday, nevertheless -- even if I do have to make a "Talk to Her" correction the very next week. See Kangaroo Jack forum for related items.
Ken: To make a long explanation short, "Far From Heaven" seemed something like genius for about an hour when it was a quasi-satire of 1950s melodramas -- then it actually TURNED INTO A 1950s melodrama, which just about all sucked, and I lost respect for the damn movie at that point. More on that some other time when I have time.
BTW, I didn't think that much of "Mulholland Drive" either, but I thought "Memento" was one of the most brilliant movies ever made and "Ghost World" was simply better than "Y Tu Mama Tambien." (As I already said, I don't know about "Talk to Her.")
As for this lists and rankings, I'm an analyst. I analyze things. It is second nature for me to care about these things. Plus, if I wasn't a critic that had to see everything anyway, I'd probably base what I'd pay to watch at least partially on critical acclaim -- if everybody's claiming it's the greatest thing since refried rice, then I've got to see what all the hooplah's about. But that's just me.
