01/27/03: Good points, Deaner & Mucus (that cracked me up); Critico

You've got a point, too -- didn't think it was nearly as amusing when I read it again. Eh, I defer to Cranky's superiority.

As for "CFL," oddly enough I'm close to being done with the novel version of that one. The second half of the novel is mostly the same as the entire screenplay, but the first half is sort of the "prequel" to the screenplay -- the origins of the trio and how they came together, as well as the beginnings of Creep's descent into insanity. However, I'm starting to think that no matter how well I wrote it, it's probably not sellable. The "artistic shock genre" sort of died in the 80s, partially because nothing's shocking anymore, at least not the things that shocked people in the 60s and 70s when such similar fare as "Midnight Cowboy," "A Clockwork Orange" and "Requiem for a Dream" were being written. (Semi-obvious exception: "Fight Club.") I have this bad feeling that most publishers won't consider it something they can find an audience for (too much INSIDIOUSLY dark comedy). And the novel itself has gotten a little long-in-the-tooth -- it'll probably end up being about 400-500 published pages, which is no "Harry Potter 5," but daunting nevertheless considering how short most books are within its genre.

Anyway, that's the status of "CFL," which I never even thought of trying to sell as a screenplay. If the book is published and a film is going to be made from it, I think I'll be able to edit the screenplay down to something filmable that will satisfy me because all the stuff that's cut out will at least be in the book. Though if the book has any fans (and obviously it will if somebody decides to make it into a film), they may feel somewhat betrayed by the fact that the first half of the book is almost completely ignored...

I look most like Freak, but all 3 characters have some of my personality traits or life experiences -- the Creep in the first half of the book is actually modeled mostly after my most insane friend, but he certainly hasn't lost his mind quite like the Creep in the screenplay... yet. Thanks for the comments!
