That way we at first viewing believe Ripley is a goner. Then we find out it's a nightmare. The shock effect wouldn't have been as big if it hadn't been done this way.

I think Ripley got the briefing in reality, then later she gets nightmares and dreams about being given the briefing with the horrific end result.
