Justification for capital punishment always seems to me to have one great inherent flaw. Which is this: (I'm going to tell you anyway <yawn>) If the State is proposing to punish for the act of taking a life, how can it's punishment take the form of the same act – surely the fact that it takes place disspassionately makes it an even more barbaric action. By the way, I thought this was an excellent piece of cinema, with a marvellous and courageous performance by the underrated Sean Penn, who should have got the oscar... although considering 'Titanic' and 'Rocky' are Best Picture recipients, he probably doesn't deserve it!
