11/12/1998: Re: I like Westerns

Actually, it's amazing how pliable the "Western" is. Consider the range of "Western"-based entertainment:

Big Western epics like "Red River", "Stagecoach", "Dances With Wolves", etc. Musical "singing cowboy" serials. Cartoons: "Quickdraw McGraw", "Go-Go Gophers", "Ricochet Rabbit". The martial arts TV masterpiece "Kung Fu". Hispanic heroes: "Cisco Kid". Kafkaesque arthouse ("Dead Man"). TV dramas--"Bonanza", "Gunsmoke", "Medicine Woman", "Rifle Man". TV comedies--"F Troop". Spy-tech sci-fi: "The Wild, Wild West". Slapstick absurdity--"Blazing Saddles". Subtitled, no cowboys--"Windwalker". Grade-B Horror: "Dracula meets Billy the Kid". Tongue-in-cheek "message" pics--"Little Big Man", "The Skin Game". Musicals--"Oklahoma". Heartthrob publicity vehicles--"Young Guns".
