08/21/96: Re: DEAD MAN echoes BLOOD MERIDIAN.

Okay, I'll bite since no-one else has ...

I disagree, Dead Man is (well I think) about an outsider in an alien environment. Blake is not an innocent, he just isn't used to where he finds himself, although he starts to try and fit in (shooting the 2 bald ranger types as "poetry") But for him, its all a bit "odd".

The kid in Blood Meridian is not so much an innocent, but just a beginner, a true novice. The kid never protests any thing, he's just joins in and in the end, is better at it. The kid may be a 'victim' of the society and culture forged by amongst others, The Judge, but that doesn't mean he'd hestitate to kick your teeth in.

So for me, Blake cares but doesn't understand, the B.M. kid doesn't care and doesn't bother understanding. Blake feels lost in a nightmare, the kid just fits in, lashing out at anything that messes with him.

They're both set in the same place, but for Blake its background, while the kid's *THERE*.

But when I was watching Dead Man, I admit I did see one guy that reminded me of the kid, but that was the cannibal cowboy.

"... Austrian? Bang."
