10/25/96: wandering around the west

Posted By: Sean

There must be something about wandering around the (new) ultra-violent wild west that MAKES you a cowboy. The kid did it in <<Blood Meridian>>, Blake did it in <<Dead Man>>. And both not cowboys to start with. But this starting state is ALL they had in common, as far I can see. The kid is truly amoral, while Blake is truly moral. The kid started with the rudimentary experience that life sucks, while Blake started in a nice suit and a big sadness. He was moral and bearing his noble burden. The kid and Blake start out on VERY different levels and end up as cowboys sent to heaven by their makers. The kid was made by the devil (and WHAT a devil), while Blake was fashioned in the imagination of a wise indian god.

A great movie VS. one of the best books I've ever read.
