04/04/02: Alas Babylon.

Posted By: liquid-sunshine

Thirty years ago or so I read a book, titled, Alas Babylon. It was about the end of the world, as we know it. The end of the world started over Iraq, when an American fighter pilot shoots down a Russian MIG. Things snowball, and before you know what's happening, the commies are bombing us and we're bombing the commies. Humanity balls up into a small group in Central Florida, where mankind makes its last stand.

Well, that was fiction. Today's facts don't jibe with yesterday's fiction. Except for the fact that the end of the world WILL begin in the middle-east. The Israeli- Palestinian conflict is just a prelude to the conflagration that will engulf the world. Nothing can stop the inevitable demise of humanity, worldwide. Nothing can stop us from killing ourselves. We all have a death wish, which is only kept in check by our respective civilizations. But each year those bindings that keep us civilized grow thinner.

All it took for the Israelis to break those bindings is 18 months of suicide bombers. What will it take for us, who aren't used to instant death served up in cafes and restaurants? For the western world, for whom the agony of 4 thousand dead sends us off to a war we can never win. For Americans, who only remember the last time they paid 99 cents for a gallon of gas.

I have no hope for the world. The wrong people are in charge. We should be at the mercy of blithering idiots. The combined mentality of the dumbest among us far exceeds the intelligence of any country. An aggregate collection of Nobel Prize winning politicians seems to negate their combined mental acumen. Just like two or more sociopaths result in serial killers.

Alas Babylon. Alas...the end of the world is nigh. And when the last flicker of the last candle is doused, there won't be a whimper, just a sigh of relief.
