Nice melodrama liquid:-) But the fact that we've been pondering our extinction for so many years makes me sceptical of the immediacy of the apocalypse. Despite the recent proliferation of suicide terrorism, we don't have a death wish. And though there are scapegoats for our problems our leaders aren't particularly more corrupt than before. So what's changed?
In fact, we *are* at a turning point and I for one hope that "the world as we know it" ends soon. Only groups that have been completely marginalized and which have no hope of regaining the mainstream of public opinion resort to suicide terrorism. 9/11 may have been the first crack in the dam for religious fundamentalism, and hopefully this intifada will prove the same for corrupt dictators like Arafat.
I don't pretend to sympathize with Sharon or Israel's actions and I have no illusions that the short run successor to Arafat will be any better. But overall there's reason to hope for our children and our children's children. Even if we have to put up with some rhetoric in the meantime;-)
