09/06/01: The Full Monty on "Deep End"

I read these posts and notice that nobody is talking about the actual film - you guys just riff on each other. Anyway..

I thought the movie stank (stunk, stink, whatever). I know the critics are hailing the Deep End as a nuveau retro 40's style movie, but all I saw was a mother that ran around covering up for mistakes her son made and somewhat falling in love with a lowlife man who's blackmailing her (or who is too weak to stand up to the man who is blackmailing him to blackmail her).

I found it amazing that there were absolutely no redeeming values to any male character. The father is an absentee dad - yeah, he's raking in the money (nice house as proof), but he's detatched from his kids (aside from the quaint email) and his woman is lonely. The grandfather is a kind old soul, but he can't do anything - a semi-invalid (what purpose did he have in the film? To show how wonderful the lowlife is by saving him?) Then there's the lowlife - who brings a tape showing the woman's beloved son getting rimmed by his lover (btw, why couldn't she simply say "go ahead and show it to the police" - how can the tape be proof that the kid killed him? it only shows they were lovers; also, if the lowlife brings a tape to the police, he'll be revealing himself, and the police will investigate him as well, like to find out where he got the tape from.) Then there's the son, who acts like a serious brat - who hardly acknowledges mom in the beginning, that pouts and rolls his eyes to mom when she needs to find out what's going on, and only shows compassion when mom has been pulled through the ringer all for his sake. The boy needs a good butt whipping.

I didn't see the romantic connection between woman and lowlife, I didn't see anything redeeming in the lowlife that can't make a stand for the woman he supposedly loves, can't see how she can love a man that's forcing her to find money she doesn't have (and even if she did pay, how does she know the tape would't have been leaked anyway). The cast seemed to be acting in a very minimal way, indicating emotions and not really feeling it.

In all, I felt I wasted my money. Or maybe I just didn't get it.
