03/15/1999: As for the title, you needed to read the novel

For those of you who didn't know, The Deep End of The Ocean is an oustanding novel by Wisconsin native Jacquelyn Michard which explains why the setting is Madison. The title comes from a question Ben asks when he is a little boy. The family is on vacation near an ocean (I can't recall which one) and he asks "Mom, is there a deep end of the ocean?" And later in the novel, when Ben/Sam has returned to the Cappadora family, Beth says to herself "There IS a deep end of the ocean. That's where Ben is, and he cannot come back." So that is where the title originates. With this wonderful novel, the film had a LOT of potential but none of it was there. The novel was powerful, well - written and brought out tons of emotion. The movie wasn't close to moving me to tears at any point. Candy Bliss, played by Whoopi Goldberg, was one of the main characters in the novel but she was in the movie for MAYBE 10 minutes. And so much of the novel was skipped. All of the sudden Ben was kidnapped and then he was back. He didn't return to the family until the last quarter of the book. One part they left out is WHY Vincent was in jail at the end. He was trying out for the basketball team and the coach was an asshole and was picking on him and telling him he wouldn't make it that he was a sissy to Vincent took his car and totaled it. The movie was really lame compared to the book. Maybe if you didn't read the book first it wasn't that bad. Making books into movies isn't such a great idea, because movies can never EVER live up to the book. If anyone, preferably women I'd assume, who want to read a good book, this is on the top of my list.
