03/16/1999: How many times do I have to tell you people...

You can't judge a movie by its book!

Nobody can make a perfect adapatation-- novels are TOO DAMN LONG. You've got to cut stuff. And when you start cutting stuff you have to change stuff to smooth out the edges of that stuff you just cut! In the end they become two seperate, breathing entities and they each should be judged by their own merits.

I'm tired of using my "Jaws" example, so I'll use "Harrison Bergernon," which somebody brought up in another forum. Most of those guys claimed that the movie was pretty good, and all of us liked the short story. But THEY WERE NOTHING ALIKE. Did you hear those guys complaining? No-- the book stood on its own merits, according to them. And then you have my favorite book "Flowers For Algernon," which was turned into a hideous movie called "Charly." But I can't say the screenwriter didn't catch the essence of the book-- for once the direction just went south. So even though it was a fairly decent and accurate adapatation of a great book, the movie still turned out Godawful!

I'll leave this discussion now. I don't feel right about talking about movies I haven't seen yet. But since I haven't read the book, my thoughts on the movie would be fairly unbiased.
