07/08/01: Not bad, actually quite good

Once I saw this GREAT trailer in the theatre: a digital clock counting down; lyrical shots of jets flying overheadl; two spaceshuttles being prepared for lift-off. And the voice-over: "(blablablah)...could become man's greatest moment."

Of course it was Armageddon. And I went to see it. And it had Bruce Willis in it, on autopilot. And some nobody called Ben Affleck. And Liv Tyler (she used to be a model so I guess she is photogenic, but look at her in That Thing You Do: she really has a horse's face (as we say in Holland) ie, she really is Steve Tyler's daughter). OK. Armageddon was total crap.

So I went to see that other disaster-movie, Deep Impact. In fact it was rather informative. ELE. Extinction Level Event. Mankind is going the way the dino's went. Gripping stuff. Ok, so Tea Leoni was a bit wooden. I've seen better Maximilian Schell and all the emotional stuff was also a bit boring. But it had a consistent plot, great FX (byebye, New York...) and Robert Duvall.

Not a great movie, but good enough for anyone interested in big rocks falling out of the sky. If the Discovery-channel (European edition) were to make a movie about civilization- ending meteorites, it would have been Deep Impact.
