Production is when you get paid to do something. For example, you might produce $50,000 worth of wealth per year.
Consumption is when you pay to do something. For example, you might consume $50,000 worth of wealth per year.
The total quantity of mass/energy is fixed, and we can't change that. Instead, we just use technology to make things better.
If we produce 10 trillion gallons of clean water per year by using sewage treatment and desalination, there's no reason why we can't consume 10 trillion gallons of water that year. It's not like we can ever run out of water.
If we produce 10 trillion calories of food per year, there's no reason we can't consume 10 trillion calories of food that year. It's not like we can ever run out of food.
In the long run, everything gets recycled. The total quantity of mass/energy is fixed. We can't run out of it.
