You are mistaken.
The reason we avoided the disasters is because we IGNORED the advice of the doommsayers.
The doomsayers said that in order to avoid the disasters, we should hand control of resources and the economy over to the government, and we should freeze GNP at current levels.
We ignored that advice.
Instead, we continued on with economic growth, private property, and capitalism. We consumed more resources. China and other countries became more capitalist, and consumed more resources.
We avoided the disasters because we IGNORED the advice of the doomsayers.
