Granted, there are serious problems with American popular culture, but a lot of that has to do with media consolidation (a handful of huge corporations owning most of the movie studios/TV networks/newspapers/magazines/cable channels/music labels/etc) and corporate mentalities, not with the "cultural left" (whose visibility far outweighs their actual power). Hollywood and academia are useful scapegoats for the right - the "limousine liberal" and "ivory-tower intellecutal" stereotypes are often trotted out to make it seem like the left is "out of touch" with "average Americans". Of course, the real power-brokers on the right have far more wealth and influence then any movie star or Ivy League professor...
