Largely a worthless argument isn't it? When Iran kicked the Shah out, did they build a happy democracy, or put religious fanatics in power?
Mideast and tyrannies are all but redundant, and people get the government they deserve. So it's deal with the tyrants or no deal. Be they oil sheiks or the Taliban (didn't the US give them foreign aid?)
Besides the liberals are the ones opposed to nation building, aren't they?
But, the book sounds like tired old blame game routine, if it's not the right blaming the left, it's the left blaming the right (as the reviewer outright does!) one that should cause Americans with sense to disown both parties. But that's not gonna happen.
