when they cut off 30-50% of the picture to make it fill the screen, instead of letterboxing it (which is how a movie should PROPERLY be viewed). Another name for it is "Full Frame". Those messages at the beginning of videotapes that say "This movie has been altered from it's original format to fit this screen" means you're missing some of what the director wanted you to see. Rent both formats of "Pulp Fiction" or the Star Wars trilogy and you'll see what I mean. Thankfully, DVD movies are usually both formats on the same disc, so I'll never have to put up with pan-scan again. I'm getting a DVD later this year (probably when Titanic comes out, and no it isn't a coincidence). Hope that helps.
