08/19/1999: several semi-related notes

1: Tad Williams "Memory sorrow and Thorn" sucks. period. All right, it didn't actually suck, what it needed was some editing. Or an editor with the brain capacity of a goldfinch. In fact, now that I think about it, a movie version of that series might be quite good, as they could leave out Tad's rambling babble and meandering plotlines that go nowhere. Who would you cast in the main roles, Lizzard? here's my idea: Pyrates: John Malcovich (Sp) Simon: .... (NOT Leonardo DiCaprio) Miriamele: ... Natlaie Portman Isgrimmnur: hmm... how about.... uh... damn. there's gotta be someone who fits that part. Cadrach: How about Patrick Stewart? Jirriki (how was his name spelled?): Ray Parks Josua: Liam Nesson

2: Lord of the Rings: If Peter Jackson sticks to the books close, and keeps his actors from looking stupid, and maintains both the mood and the history from the books, he'll pull it off. I have faith the Jackson is capable of this, but I'm not putting money down on it.

3: Fantasy in General: I agree with everyone... now that Fxs are better, it's possible to stick more closely to the original vision of the book, so maybe it's time to revive the genre. Still, that may mean that directors think they can make the movie out of effects instead of plot, so it'll be like the kiss of death for the genre (a second time). The only "good" fantasy movie I've seen.... "the Princess Bride". GO rent it. now. Pitiful sets, fake props, patheticly muppety monsters, and downright BAD names.... and a brilliant and witty script. Yes, ladies and gents, a script CAN save a movie.

4: I'd like to have David Edding's "the Belgariad" and Lloyd Alexanders' "the Chronicles of Prydane" see theaters. Disney tried "Prydane" a while back, in a sad, sad excuse for a movie that's best left to die ("the Black Cauldron"... shiver...), but both are worthy of the big screen
