CGI besides, what about the medium of animation? Bakshi's Lord of the Rings and Wizards rocked. The new Heavy Metal movie is supposed to come out some time this month or next.
As far as villains go, how about a film where the bad guy is the protaganist? I'm thinking along the lines of Karl Edward Wagner's Kane, Michael Moorcock's Elric, or Fritz Lieber's Fahfrd and the Grey Mouser.
Hawk the Slayer was good for a fantasy flick. So was Excalibur, Conan (both of them), and Sword and the Sorcerer. Both Beastmaster films sucked, as well as Ladyhawke (shudder) and especially Krull. Willow was ok. One of my favorite fantasy flicks to this day was a TV movie called "Fugitive of the Empire" or "The Archer". The heroes were come and go but the villain, Gar lord of snakes, was the man! What other movie would feature George Kennedy as a Barbarian Chief? I'd like to get this on video, but not pay a king's ransom while doing it.
