Actually I think there are some pretty decent fantasy movies, which have been mentioned here come to think of it. Excalibur was quite impressive as was Lady Hawke. The first Conan the Barbarian movie was okay, but the second one was pretty weak I felt. I vaguely remember seeing the Sword and the Sorcerer many years ago and liking it but I was about 6 at the time, the same goes for Willow. The Princess Bride was an excellant movie but I felt it was really a comedy even if it was in a fantasy or fairy tale like setting. As for the animated Lord of the Rings, I felt it was a nice try but no cigar. I do agree however that animation if done right would also be a good medium for fantasy or "Sword and Sorcery" productions. Assuming it done with a bit of imagination and skill - the cartoons they made of the Terry Pratchett books sucked. Somehow films like the deathstalker series put me off this genre of films a little.
