...that one reason that wizards have been kind of inept in the past is because at the time that a lot of the truly awful fantasy movies were made the FX weren't up to lots of scenes of really good magic, so you needed an excuse as to why the wizard wasn't nuking people all the time. As for skilled wizards, I think a film of the Wizard of Earthsea could be pretty damn goo, provided the director knw how to do creepiness.
From what I've read, at least Peter Jackson seems to be taking his responsibility to LOTR pretty seriously. I think maybe another reason there have been a lot of crap fantasy flicks is that hack filmmakers see it as an easy no-brainer genre that'll get them a decent return out of a geeky niche-market. In other words, crap sword-and-sorcery flicks are to decent fantasy film what cheesy teensploitation slasher movies are to decent, intelligent horror.
Just a theory - anyone got any thoughts?
