Thanks for bringing up the villain problems. Either they try to gain favor with a woman (Krull), try to bring them to the dark side and marry (legend, by the way Tim Curry did an excellent job. Tom Cruz sucked.), have a back stabbing daughter (Willow), inept or back stabbing partners (Beastmaster II), and thinks that the hero is the supposed to be a dead sorcerer (Sword and the Sorcerer. Even so that the sword looks good on film, I doubt it's practical in real life).
You may blaim it on Hollywood during the Depression. Every movie must have a happy ending. Unfortunatly it caught on.
