Eddie is truly awesome, indeed. His band (original lineaup) would make it in my top 10-20.
However...Hendrix was not the first guitar front-man. Remember how the above posts mentioned Chuck Berry? And he wasn't the first either, nor was Eddie Cochran.
Also...for technical brilliance, check out Joe Satriani (teacher of Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett and some others). He can play anything Eddie can--tapping included. But Eddie can beat him in the cool riff department (in the Led Zeppelin tradition, and Eddie always praises Jimmy Page and Jimmy Hendrix as among his influences, although I think he liked Clapton better).
