02/04/01: Re: Groucho's List of the 10 Greatest Musicians In the History of Western C

I don't how old this thread is but here's my two bits:

I prefer not to 'greater than' the true masters. They are in alphabetical order Bach, Beethoven, Mahler, and Mozart. Wagner is well to be included if for nothing else, being revolutionary. His being an ant-semite, which I'll assume to be true, has little bearing on anything; Mahler, by far the greatest composer of the modern age, was deeply influenced by him, and Mahler was Jewish. Bruckner should rank high, taking the place of Brahms (who doesn't do much for me). Schubert, though delightful, shouldn't be ranked so high. Tchaikovsky ranks high as the flamboyant genius who simply made the most beautiful ballet music ever. Finally, there's Prokofieff.
