Cashiers used to be different people, sure...but so did customers. The civility and thoughtfulness went hand-in- hand...unless you spend some time actually BEHIND the counter in their shoes, you really REALLY don't know what it's like.
Imagine a cashier being rude to you for a brief moment...then imagine being them, getting berated and belittled for the stupidest little things all day long, day in and day out. You get the pleasure of walking away and muttering "stupid cunt" to yourself...but they have to grin, suck it up, and deal with the next customer.
Sometimes they can't help but have their frustration spill over every now and then. During my years as a cashier at McDonald's, I was bitched at for everything from not counting their change back the way THEY thought I should (you're still getting back the same amount, who fucking cares?), to the way I arranged the sauce cups on their trays, to casually advising someone's kid scampering around to watch their step on the freshly mopped lobby floor ("DON'T YOU TELL MY CHILD WHAT TO DO!!!"). It's no wonder why so many fast-food employees do nasty things to customers' food these days....
(Who? Me? No way. *whistles innocently*)
