"Catcher in the Rye" and "Breathless" are both considered wonderfully significant pieces because they broke with the "established" way of doing their particular thing. In the end, though, only the people who think that breaking with establishment = good in ALL cases wound up loving the book.
And if you're me, you wish both men had never existed.
