Slothrop: That is the only possible ending I can think of that would've been worse than the real one. I understand your disappointment none the same. In most cases you like being surprised, but in others if something doesn't end the way you expect it to, it's just plain disappointing. Could you imagine Adam Sandler missing Drew Barrymore's plane in The Wedding Singer forcing her to marry Glen? It'd be unexpected but very unsatisfying. Not to mention that 90% of twist endings don't work.
Beast: I thought about the Lennon thing this morning but couldn't think of anything in the book that would make me think about killing John Lennon. Except if Chapman thought he was a phony, but even then I don't understand.
