The whole point was that he never could call Jane cause she represented his romantic ideal and that would never come true so he could never actually talk to her so there was no way his romatic ideals would collapse.
Personally I liked the book and I regularly argue it out with a friend of mine who used to like it but now has grown to view it with cynicism
