...There's a narrow age window for reading that book for the first time.
I never much liked the ending, either...I actually didn't understand it the first time because I tend to read books too quickly on the first run-through and as someone said, it's vague...I think The Bell Jar did a better job of "main character has nervous breakdown". I always thought CITR was kind of like "The Bell Jar for boys".
As for Chapman, he became obsessed with the idea of Lennon being a phony. The book was just one spark in an already roaring fire. He was a delusional schizophrenic and simply incorporated the book into his delusions. I really don't know what motivated Hinckley, though. (We talked about Chapman in my forensic psych class.)
