I used to play dungeons and dragons. And I enjoy movies about swords, dragons, and magic. So imagine my surprise when I found this movie pathetically entertaining. This movie has only half the action and charm of a syndicated fantasy show like Xena or Hercules.
Jeromy Irons plays a wizard (mage) who is seeking a magic artifact to control dragons. If he can get one, then he can overthrow the empress (Thora Birch) and take over the land. Two thieves (Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans) decide to invade the castle and look for stuff to steal. They run into Zoe McLellan, and runs away from the evil mage's goons with magic map in hand that shows a way to a wand that controls red dragons.
With all the science fiction books out on the market related to or almost related to dungeons and dragons, I can't figure out why such a lame storyline is chosen for a movie. Jeromy Irons does not make a good guy. Justin Whaley does not make a good hero. Worst, this movie drifts from one predictable scene to the next with no surprises. Whaley is going through a series of traps to get a precious jewel. Will he make it? Of course he will. Then the evil goons show up. Will he get away? Of course he will.
Kull the Conquerer was not the greatest fantasy movie by any means. But it was much better than this travesty.
p.c.
